At this week’s Green Beans, we will discuss environmental and health dimensions of waste in Ohio, along with important ways that each of us can make a positive impact.

Led by Jed Thorp and Ernie Stall of the Ohio EPA and Dr. Neil Drobny of the Waste Not Center, the discussion will begin at 7:15pm in Hayes Hall, Room 220.

We developed the Pledge during the 2008-2009 academic year to promote environmental consciousness  among Ohio State students.

By becoming a “fan” of the Pledge, you are committing to the following:

By developing a more ecologically conscious mindset and connecting it to my daily actions, I will support the health and well-being of generations to come.”

Eighteen volunteers collaborated to divert a significant amount of waste – including paper, plastic, and aluminum – from disposal in a landfill.

We would also like to thank Said Sariolghalam in Undergraduate Admissions & First Year Experience for reaching out to our organization and providing this opportunity.

Join the Geography Club for a screening of the movie “Paying the Price: the Toxic Fields of Sinaloa,” a documentary about the conditions of migrant workers in Northern Mexico.

There will be a follow-up Q&A with Melody Gonzalez, the Campaign Coordinator of Fair Food Across Borders. Melody graduated from Notre Dame where she helped lead a protest of a sports sponsorship supported by Taco Bell; this was in support of the Immokalee Workers Boycott of Taco Bell. For the past 3 years, Melody has served as a bridge between the multiple student, faith, labor, and community-based allies of the CIW, raising consciousness about the exploitation and human rights abuses faced by farm workers in Florida and moving consumers to take action to demand fair food, justice, and dignity. She also provides a unique perspective as the daughter of Mexican immigrants who worked on farms in both Sinaloa, Mexico, and in the United States.

This Wednesday, OUAB is hosting a free showing of Food, Inc. at 8:00pm in Hitchcock Hall, Room 131 (details here). SSC strongly recommends the film and encourages its members to attend.

“In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won’t go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli-the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. From October 24-25, Ohio students will gather to network and advocate for clean energy. One of the summit’s central goals will be to discuss the environmental and health effects of coal and to lobby for alternative sources of power in Ohio and across the nation.
