Mama always said “You better shop around” and that’s the idea behind this fair! Come to the South Oval from 11 to 4 this Friday (October 10th) to check out all of the environmental groups on campus and talk to the amazing people running them. There are many ways of enacting positive change in both local and global communities, and many groups to represent these different modus operandi. If you’re interested in working with OSU students and officials to make the processes on campus more sustainable, definitely stop by the SSC table!

SSC is holding a general group meeting this Wednesday, September 29, at 7:15 pm in Central Classrooms, room 254. We will discuss in detail our plans for the school year, including upcoming educational and advocacy initiatives. Come hear about how you can play an active role in promoting sustainability on campus!

The involvement fair features over 700 clubs, lots of information, and tons of free food. Come find us! We’ll be among the other environmental groups on campus (it’s a great opportunity to meet the entire community). Monday September 20th, 12 to 4pm on the Oval

It was a team effort, with help from Green Columbus, a local non-profit dedicated to promoting sustainable living and Ohio State’s Department of Facilities Operations and Development to assure that there were no environmental penalties.The event scored an extra point by featuring entertainment, food, prizes, a cash bar, and appearances from Alumni Association president Archie Griffin and the Ohio State cheerleaders. The Alumni Association has scored a major victory among both current fans and the future generations of Buckeyes who wont have to live among the trash generated by ours.

Looking to host your own zero-waste tailgate? Check out these tips from Green Columbus:

1. Use local and/or organic foods, beverages, and condiments.

2. Opt for products in bulk; choose minimal or recyclable packaging (avoid single-serving packaging).

3. Incorporate reusable items such as plates, silverware, cups, tablecloths, napkins, etc.

4. Choose eco-friendly power sources such as propane (with a trade-in option), biofuel, solar, pedal, and rechargeable batteries. (And don’t even think about using lighter fluid.)

This year, the Buckeye Book Community selected the book No Impact Man as the summer reading for the incoming freshman class. The book chronicles the experience of the author, Colin Beavan, and his family in their quest to live with zero negative environmental impact for one year. Billed as “the adventures of a guilty liberal who attempts to save the planet and the discoveries he makes about himself and our way of life in the process”, the book has sparked a national movement, a movie, a blog, and our very own “No Impact Week” at Ohio State. Colin Beavan will be coming to campus to speak October 4th and 5th

Each program begins at 7 p.m. in Mershon Auditorium and is a ticketed event. First-year students can sign up for a ticket through the Success Series. A limited number of tickets for the public will be available for pick up in 120 Enarson Hall starting September 1, 2010.

Buzz has been building about the market, and many farmers sold out on the opening day. Stop on by and pick up some ripe Ohio berries, field greens and green beans, fresh-cut flowers, as well as baked goods, artisan cheeses, meats, and specialty items. The market is open from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursdays through October 28th, and the selections of produce and other products each week will change depending on what’s ripe for picking and ready for eating.

The market is held rain or shine, and 100% of the profits go directly to local farmers. Food stamps and W.I.C. are accepted by some vendors, and produce is donated to the food pantry at Neighborhood Services following each market. A few vendors are also participating in CSAs—community-supported agriculture, in which farmers deliver shares of produce on a weekly basis to subscribers—with the market serving as a pickup spot for their subscribers.

At this week’s Green Beans, we will discuss environmental and health dimensions of waste in Ohio, along with important ways that each of us can make a positive impact.

Led by Jed Thorp and Ernie Stall of the Ohio EPA and Dr. Neil Drobny of the Waste Not Center, the discussion will begin at 7:15pm in Hayes Hall, Room 220.

Jim Datko, a graduate student in Earth Sciences, will lead the discussion. This quarter, Datko is the TA for “Exploring Water Issues” (Earth Sciences 204).

Green Beans: Ecology & Coffee is a monthly discussion series, established by Students for a Sustainable Campus in February 2008. We invite speakers from across central Ohio to engage students in a dialog on issues related to energy, the environment, and public health.

By becoming a “fan” of the Pledge, you are committing to the following:
